Sanford Bishop has spent his career serving the people of Middle and Southwest Georgia with a clear goal: building stronger communities and creating opportunity for every family. Now in his sixteenth term in Congress, he’s known as a voice for balance, responsibility, and real results.
Sanford is a senior member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, where he leads the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. From this position, he has secured billions in federal support for Georgia farmers, small towns, and rural communities—delivering disaster relief, strengthening our food supply, and making sure local priorities are heard in Washington.
He also serves on key subcommittees overseeing veterans’ programs, military construction, and financial services, where he has fought to expand health care for veterans, modernize infrastructure, and keep government accountable. His leadership has brought more than $10 billion in federal investment to his district, funding everything from hospitals and schools to job-creating projects.
Sanford’s roots are deep in Georgia. The son of an educator and a librarian, he grew up knowing the value of hard work and service. After enlisting in the U.S. Army and later earning degrees from Morehouse College and Emory Law School, he dedicated his life to public service—first in the Georgia Legislature, and since 1992, in Congress.
Throughout his career, Sanford has earned a reputation as a commonsense Democrat who can work across the aisle without compromising his values. He has been recognized for championing veterans, small businesses, farmers, and working families while standing firm on the need for fiscal responsibility.
Sanford lives in Albany with his wife, Vivian. They have a daughter and a granddaughter, and remain active members of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. For Sanford, public service has always been about more than politics—it’s about improving lives in the communities he represents.
