Mike Thompson has represented California in Congress since 1998, bringing a record of service rooted in hard work, common sense, and putting people ahead of politics. A Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Mike knows the value of duty and the responsibility that comes with it. That experience guides his work to deliver for families, veterans, and communities across Northern California.
In Congress, Mike serves on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, where he focuses on tax policy, health care, and policies that strengthen the middle class. He has built a reputation for finding bipartisan solutions that expand access to care, protect seniors, create jobs, and support small businesses. As co-founder of the bipartisan Congressional Wine Caucus, Mike has also been a champion for the region’s growers, producers, and agricultural economy.
Mike’s leadership has earned recognition from veterans’ groups, environmental advocates, health care providers, and small business leaders. Whether it’s expanding community health centers, securing funding for local projects, or protecting natural resources, he’s proven his commitment to results that last.
Before serving in Congress, Mike worked in the vineyard industry, taught public administration, and served in the California State Senate, where he chaired the Budget Committee. He and his wife Janet, a family nurse practitioner, live in Napa Valley. Together they raised two sons—one a firefighter and one a deputy sheriff—and now enjoy time with their three granddaughters.
Mike’s approach to governing is simple: listen, work across the aisle, and deliver for the people who sent him to Washington. That’s why he’s proud to be part of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of Democrats focused on responsibility, accountability, and solutions that put communities first.
